about

hi. i’m lia.

i’m so glad you’re here. :)

Before kinesiology, I lived many lives: Competing and teaching as a professional ballroom dancer, earning a Master’s in Food Studies & Nutrition, and then starting a boutique digital marketing agency focused on F&B and hospitality. I spent 15 years in New York, studying, dancing, teaching and working in PR and communications.

I loved my life then although it had it’s challenges. I was dealing with chronic pain from dance injuries that never healed properly, immune issues, and crippling anxiety. I decided to move from NYC to Hong Kong for a relationship, only to have it end a few months later. Cue breakdown and existentialist crisis, which then led me to Thailand where I was introduced to muscle testing. I was immediately fascinated that my body could reveal things out of my conscious awareness that were stressful. As soon as I returned to Hong Kong, I signed up for a kinesiology course and never looked back.

In discovering what I didn’t know I needed to truly become well, I became fascinated with what we as humans need to flourish. I pivoted my marketing work to focus mainly in the wellness industry, continued studying Neuroenergetic Kinesiology by Hugo Tobar in which I am a practitioner, and eagerly began working at a kinesiology clinic.

I then became a gentle birth doula, a mother and the journey of understanding emotional well-being continued. I was an Aware Parenting instructor for 4 years as I was riveted by the innate coping mechanism children are born with to release stress with tears, tantrums and play. I learned to listen and accept my child’s feelings, and also my own. (It’s still a work in progress!)

I also became deeply inspired by Parenting for a Peaceful World by Robin Grille, as well as his work on Inner Child Journeys in which I am now a facilitator; and also the work of Dr. Gabor Maté and his work on the connection between stress and disease, childhood trauma and addiction.

My path has been woven together by curiosity, creativity and the desire to understand what helps humans feel well, connected and truly themselves.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, my husband and I moved from Hong Kong to Eindhoven, The Netherlands. He gifted me the book Momo by Michael Ende saying that he thought I would enjoy it. The book struck a cord with me and I suspect it planted a seed. My husband developed an interest in intrinsic motivation in education, so when my son got close to school age, we began our search for schools that supported both inquiry-based learning and emotional well-being. We couldn’t find one similar to what we envisioned, so we decided to start our own!

In 2024, the Natural Learning Center (NLC) was born—a primary school that prioritizes natural learning and intrinsic motivation as key components of effective education. When children feel safe—free from judgment, treated with kindness and respect, and valued for their differences—their neurological system operates optimally, enhancing their capacity for learning and growth. Our goal at NLC is to help children use their time with us to develop essential life skills, including emotional intelligence, self-expression, critical thinking in a continuously safe and stimulating environment.

My fascination with what we need to flourish hasn’t dimmed over the years, it’s only strengthened, especially given what’s happening in the world today. Being well does not exist in a vacuum—we are not truly well, unless we are all well. We need more humans connected with themselves, creativity and community. We must have courage to not only take meaningful action in our own lives, but also for the good of the collective.

Everything I’m drawn to explore, study and incorporate in my life and practice is anchored by the belief that a more beautiful world is possible. Being connected to ourselves, our innate knowing, being able to listen and accept our feelings, have empathy for ourselves, allows us to have empathy for others, be more creative, and more resilient…and to be able to come together to make this more beautiful world come true.

my Approach

I don’t see wellness as something to ‘fix’ or force, but as a process of de-conditioning, reconnecting and supporting the body’s own wisdom—in a way that respects culture, context and individuality.

deeply personal

The journeys of healing and self-discovery are not one size fits all. I consider stress on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. My approach is trauma-informed and I take into account systemic injustice, inequality, societal conditioning and cultural norms.

congruence is key

Connection to yourself allows us to be deeply genuine, authentic, honest with ourselves and others, and thereby congruent. I hold the belief that the more congruent we are in our daily living, the less stress we experience. This gives us greater capacity to find balance and ease again no matter what life brings.

symptom = portal

I believe that you are perfect exactly as you are and the natural intelligence of your body. I view symptoms and challenges with curiosity and as opportunities to gain awareness, not as something inherently wrong or to be fixed. I see true healing as acceptance for what is in any given moment.

you should know…

I’m a speed reader and love to read. Current obsessions: Anything by Mimi Matthews, like her Belles of London series. I’ll also happily read anything involving fantasy or dragons.

I don’t watch much but television, but I adore Ted Lasso (watched more times than I can count) and Bridgerton (Seasons 2 and 3 are my favourite).

I like writing. You can find my words on my Substack or blog. I also like playing the piano.

I have a sock puppet named Gus. My dream is to be a puppeteer in Avenue Q or Fraggle Rock. I’m working on it.

I grew up in Hong Kong, lived in New York City for 15 years, spent time in Bali where I met my now husband, and now live in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
